Southend World War 1: Remember Us

PinpointCreate, working with partners Southend Borough Council and Southend Museums and with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund have created a year long commemoration of the First World War in Southend.

We started by 'creating' a proscenium arch music hall style theatre in a lecture theatre in the new Beecroft Gallery in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

We developed an original production combining professional and community actors, musicians and volunteers. Children from Southend primary schools were bused to the Beecroft Gallery for Museum talks, Gallery visits and a performance of Southend WW1: Remember Us during a week in February 2015. At the weekend performances were held for the public.

Inspired by this and the venue, Earl'sHall Primary School performed their own WW1 play in the Beecroft Gallery Theatre!

In March 2015 St. Bernard's High School and Arts College put on their own original performance and exhibition on the First World War including filmed dance performances.

In June a budding theatre group formed by E15 graduates also performed their commemorative World War play in the new theatre space at the Beecroft.

And in July, Southend High School for Girls held performances of an original play devised, written and played by the students, based on their own research on Southend during WW1.

The Senior Schools  took complete control of their project from creating, researching and developing the subject, through managing 'front of house', costume and lighting design.

PinpointCreate were able to offer workshops on different aspects of theatre and creative writing and Museum staff offered assistance in research techniques and historical information.

Please come and see us at a series of Commemoration Events and Exhibitions on Friday/Saturday 6th/7th November and Tuesday/Wednesday 10th/11th November 2015 at the Beecroft Gallery Theatre, Victoria Avenue, Southend on Sea
